I can tell you that we have reached our second year. I think all LoCo teams can share thought on how much work it’s put to go and share Free and Open Source Software to all with the best of intentions and the most unselfish volunteer work. To serve those who seek for a little aid.

It has been 2 years of growth and we can be proud of that, The loCo team Ubuntu-ve has establish itself as a collective of people willing to share “humanity to others” wherever we might be. We hope that this year we can  generate more participation and be throughout Venezuela.

We close two years of continuous work, and I long with great emotion for our participation in the years ahead. It is an honor to be part of this Local Community and to be working alongside some great people.

Many thanks to all those who started this team, and thank you very much to all members that today make up this great community. and a Special Mention to all Neighboring LoCo teams in Latin America for their fantastic work, It is their Sinergy that definetely keeps participation fresh.

les puedo decir que hemos cumplido nuestro segundo año. En verdad no
tienen idea del trabajo que TODOS USTEDES han realizado para llevar al
frente la idea de proveer software libre y de código abierto a todos por
igual con buenas intenciones y con la mejor de la disposición par ayudar
a quienes buscaran un poco de apoyo en nosotros.

Ha sido 2 años de crecimiento y podemos estar orgullosos de eso, cada
año  El equipo local ubuntu-ve logra establecerse mas como un colectivo
de personas que llevan los principios de “humanidad para todos”. Y
esperamos en este año que entra generar mas participación. para así poder
estar prácticamente en TODA VENEZUELA.

Ya cerramos dos años de trabajo continuo, y espero con emoción como sera
nuestra participación en los años venideros. Es Un placer contar con
todos ustedes y es un honor formar parte de esta gran Comunidad.

Muchas gracias a todos los que iniciaron a este equipo, y muchas gracias a todos los miembros que hoy integran esta gran comunidad.

A year and 3 months ago, I felt a tremendous desire to bring computers to less priviledged children. I shared my intentions  and many people expressed interest and thought on doing the same.Many  helped me in the first few days, We looked at the modest legacy hardware consider the hardware, we tested at least 5 distros (slackware, ubuntu, debian, prometheus, kurumin), indeed was a pretty interesting experience. We invested considerable time in choosing the tools and soon enough we installed ubuntu on those machines. The time has passed quickly and we have gotten more hardware. More computers have been given to us to be donated. All under the same conditions. all thanks to the particular volunteer and unselfish effort by those who participated.

But the teaching that was leading the donation noticed that much more primary needs had to be covered . The children of this shelter needed food. Very significant donations were achieved  regarding feeding children and getting them the school uniforms and now we can talk about donating computers and classes for them at the shelter.

Well, last week  for the first time, I felt what it means donating a computer to a child who has close to nothing. We took 2 computers to a “home” which houses 13 children from ages 8 to 16. This place gives food and shelter to children that do not have the attention of their parents. These children immediately took the mouse and delighted with every game they could find,  a new world is behind these PCs.

I have received good support from velug-maracaibo and from IglURBE, who intends to donate to around 50 Mac G4 with edubuntu on them. Richard Holt (active member of the OpenOffice.org translation and documentation efforts in Venezuela) made me a supply of spare parts for processors, memory, keyboards and many other things to work on reviving some machines that have flaws.

The Future of the project is not only give computers, It is to begin classes on basic computer use and bring interest in anything related to PC’s either programming, administration, maintenance. The Children’s Home has a workshop that was used for carpentry and refurbishment, we are thinking of making it a laboratory and a workshop and tools to teach these boys and girls and enabling them to be productive in the near future.

This is part of a project that seeks to bring tecnology and education to less priviledged children in Maracabo, venezuela and it is serving as a pilto for other people to follow in other cities of Venezuela.

Hace un año y 2 meses, sentí unas ganas inmensas de llevar computadoras a niños con escasos recursos. comente mi idea y la lleve a donde fui. mucha gente se mostró interesado y hasta tenían pensado hacer lo mismo. Muchos compañeros me ayudaron en los primeros días a estudiar el hardware modesto y en verdad fue una experiencia bastante interesante. Invertimos bastante tiempo en escoger las herramientas y se logro instalar (GNU/)Linux en unas maquinitas muy pero muy viejitas. El tiempo paso y llego mas hardware. Mas computadoras fueron donadas. todas bajo las mismas condiciones. y una a una se fueron armando. todo con esfuerzo voluntario y desinteresado por parte de los que participaron conmigo.

Pero la persona que estaba trabajando conmigo, noto que mucho mas allá de computadoras. Los niños de este hogar necesitaban comida. se consiguió donativos muy representativos con respecto a lo que tiene que ver con la alimentación de los niños y ahora si podemos hablar de donar computadoras y de clases en el HOGAR.

Pues ayer por primera vez, sentí lo que significa regalar una computadora a un niño que no tiene absolutamente nada. Levamos 2 computadoras a una “CASA HOGAR” que alberga 13 niños. Este lugar les brinda comida y techo a niños de la calle. No tienen madre ni padre, pero tienen linux. Estos niños de inmediato tomaron el mouse y se deleitaron con todos los juegos que pudieron encontrar un mundo nuevo detras de esas PC’s.

Actualmente he recibido buen apoyo de parte del grupo IglURBE, quien tiene intención de donar al rededor de 50 Mac G4 con GNU/linux Instalado y herramientas educativas. Richard Holt me hizo una entrega de piezas para repuestos de procesadores, memoria, teclados y muchas otras cosas para poder trabajar en reactivar algunas maquinitas que tienen defectos.

El Futuro del proyecto no es solo dar las computadoras  es en dos semanas comenzar clases de uso de computación básica y según sea el interés llevarles conocimientos sobre cualquier cosa relacionada con pcs. bien sea programación, administración, mantenimiento de PCs. La Casa Hogar cuenta con un taller que anteriormente se Utilizaba para carpintería y estamos considerando reacondicionarlo para tener un laboratorio y un taller y enseñar herramientas a estos muchachos que les permitan ser productivos en un futuro no lejano. Ellos tienen de 8 a 16 años.

¿Que necesitamos?, En esta fase necesitamos colaboración a todo nivel. necesitamos activar los recursos de edu.softwarelibre.org.ve (estan activos solo necesita colocar contenido y mejorar el tema) necesitamos un equipo que pueda ayudarnos a elaborar un wiki de referencia para estos jovencitos. Lecciones de clases para instructores. y simplemente un sitio donde se pueda difundir lo que se hace aquí y estoy seguro que esto esta pasando en otras ciudades de nuestro país así pues.

hay gran trabajo realizado por comunidades latinoamericanas en este aspecto y creo que nos podemos nutrir de esto.

“IGLURBE con la visión de realizar jornadas de aprendizaje (instalación, uso y manejo) de las diferentes distribuciones GNU/Linux, asesorías sobre las diferentes distribuciones GNU/Linux y creación de una comunidad en línea destinada a la realización de Foros Abiertos para todas las personas interesadas en Tecnologías Libres, lleva hacia la comunidad universitaria de la URBE, “LIBERA TU PC”. El Objetivo Principal de este evento es promover el uso y desarrollo de la Tecnología Libre, aumentando el número de usuarios bajo plataformas basadas en Software Libre, implementando y promoviendo el desarrollo tecnológico de la comunidad universitaria.

En esta ocasión se celebra el lanzamiento de la distribución UBUNTU, la cual es un sistema operativo basado en Debian GNU/Linux que trae los mas recientes avances en tecnologías libres y de estándares abiertos para desktops y servidores. Contaremos con la participación de la comunidad local Ubuntu Venezuela quienes brindaran una serie de charlas para presentar este novedoso sistema operativo.

IglURBE exhorta a que participen activamente en este evento que se realiza para el fortalecimiento de los ideales de software libre.”

A little belated, but a party is a party. The Ubuntu-ve team worked hard on FLISOL and now it is time to celebrate some hardy stuff, in Maracaibo we have decided to give some talks at a university and then we will head for a local restaurant for some lunch. If you happen to be around, please come by. Thanks the guys at IGLURBE for the enormous support.

El Festival Latinoamericano de Instalación de Software Libre, FLISOL fue bien concurrido en (Maracaibo). y por lo que pude averigua en Merida, Caracas y Barquisimeto también hubo bastante movimiento.

En FLISOL este año, Muchas personas trajeron sus equipos a instalar masivamente software libre. Algunas otras personas solo vinieron a estar en contacto con la comunidad y pedir ayuda con algo. las demostraciones fueron bastante efectivas y  hubo presentaciones sobre cosas bastante útiles. Mucha gente también solo viene a ver de que se trata el Software Libre y al final del dia se lleva mas de los uqe esperaba.

Ubuntu-ve y FLISOL, Bueno este año (tal y como se hizo el año pasado), El equipo se unió para poder salir a apoyar a los organizadores con lo que se pudiera. Muchos miembros de Ubuntu-ve salieron a brindar ayuda a esa gente que esta ansiosa de probar software libre. Felicito a todos los demás miembros de Ubuntu-ve que participaron en otras ciudades, (ya leeremos en blogs y en listas de correo).

Muchísimas gracias a los organizadores de FLISOL a nivel NACIONAL y a los organizadores locales en ciudades por permitirnos participar.

Like Leandro in Nicaragua, the Festival Latinoamericano de Instalación de Software Libre, FLISOL was MASSIVE in my city (Maracaibo). I also I also spoke with people in other cities, like Merida and Caracas, Barquisimeto and we did have quite a turn up for the event. I was involved in the organization in my city and we had very kind sponsors and volunteers for the event.

FLISOL is a yearly event where people bring their machines and they get in touch with the community. Not only do they install a Free OS or free aplications on their computers, but volunteers also share tips and tricks and people get to see the community in action. Demostrations really blow people away. Presentations on really useful stuff. Lots of people just come to wonder what this Free Software is all about and they take more than they bargained for, if you know what I mean.

Ubuntu-ve in FLISOL, well the team decided to massively support the organizers of FLISOL in Venezuela and we organized ourselves in little sub teams to volunteer in the cities where the event was happening, we had members in Merida, Barquisimeto, Valencia, Caracas, Maracaibo. and that was very cool to see ubunteros-ve heeding the call for active involvement in promoting K/ED/X/UBUNTU large and wide. The team took local mirrors of hardy (assuggested by the Colombian and the Ecuador Teams) and that made our install que very short. we had a group of volunteers helping install and people were delighted to have the oportunity to learn something new. I also gave a talk on  the TOP 5 apps for the linux desktop. I considered this a basic talk on 5 apps you can’t really live without and it was oriented to desktop users. People in the crowd felt really involved. I should have pictures from all the cities soon.

Thanks to the Organizers of FLISOL in Venezuela and in Latinamerica  for providing Unity towards our shared goal. and from Venezuela, I salute all other Latinamerican LoCo teams helping out in FLISOL.

Ubuntu-ve tuvo la oportunidad de compartir con los asistentes del 4to congreso nacional de software libre. Los asistentes al evento pudieron sentir comunidad. el equipo de Ubuntu-ve repartio trípticos informativos (todos disponibles en nuestro sitio de Material POP) podian solicitar que se les grabara la versión de Ubuntu que quisieran. siendo Xubuntu la gran sorpresa con una cantidad enorme de CD’s entregados.  por Ubuntu-ve participarón, Nathalie Colina, Efrain Valles, Cesar Sevilla en el stand.

Ubuntu-ve quiere agradecerle a las damas de Activistas por el software libre por la solidaridad durante el evento. y a los organizadores por brindar un espacio para tan importante labor.

El CNSL continua su camino por las ciudades de Venezuela.

Well, It’s been a while since my last post. I have been working hard with the ubuntu-ve team to get the polo shirts ready for upcoming events and try to organize the team in order to participate in the next couple of weeks. Yesterday In Maracaibo, we had CNSL, Congreso Nacional de Software Libre. Next week in all Latin American countries (and now spain too), we have FLISOL, which is a Latin American Install fest. and Both events being just a week apart in my city. So in different cities the Ubuntu-ve team is organizing a little activity to help out those that are just starting out with ubuntu.

CNSL

In Maracaibo CNSL wrapped up yesterday. UBUNTU-VE just ROCKED. We copied Xubuntu / Kubuntu / Ubuntu / Edubuntu cd’s in both live and alternate, we handed out flyers with the team info for further contact and we handed out install instructions to attendees(spanish) and the flavors of ubuntu flyers, which explains the different versions of ubuntu. We also had a small install table, where people brought their desktops and laptops and  installed Ubuntu.  Basically the Ubuntu-ve team took the.

Unfortunatelly I do not carry good pictures with me, my camera batt was low, as things got busier I just coundt take any pictures anymore. all I have is my cellphone pics but as soon as I get more I will post them :D.

FLISOL

El Festival Latinoamericano de Instalación de Software Libre is next week, and Hispanic LoCo teams in Latin America are heeding the call and we have shared ideas and we are looking forward to helping as many people as we can next Saturday (April 26th).  We will have a local mirror of hardy fully set up for people to install. We salute all LoCo teams promoting in FLISOL and the organizers of the events for bringing together efforts to promote FOSS. Here is the plan of what will go on in FLISOL MARACAIBO 2008

Other talks I attended this week.

I had the chance to see a student debate between free and open source software  and propietary software but this time it was young college students the ones who took on the roles and I think the outcome was fantastic. at the end I was invited on stage to share with Octavio Rossel, GLoVE (GNU/LINUX Organizado en Venezuela) and FSF-LA Council Member to close the event. It was a great experience, and I leave you with pictures from that event.
